Reading is Fundamental [Open]

[Odd as it might seem, the guy with the giant sword spends most of his free time in the library. Roy gets plenty of exercise in class (Fighter College had less rigorous training than the body-strengthening marefs!), and he's long past the point where routine training drills with his blade can do more than keep the rust off. So instead, Roy has devoted himself to acquiring information -- about the world, about the dungeons, about magic, about anything he can get his hands on, in the belief that any piece of information could prove useful in the long term.]

[Given how little knowledge had accidentally fallen into his lap this far, he definitely believes this campaign is one that requires active, independent research rather than one that conveniently hands over facts and helpful plot details in convenient notes and surprisingly-relevant books.]

[So you might have seen him in the library -- yet again -- or perhaps carrying as many books as he's allowed to take out, back to his room.]

[Reading had become one of Latvia's biggest past times at the academy, he much preferred reading about the world around him to mastering his supposed magic abilities. It gave him more peace of mind than spell casting ever could. Spending so much time in the library he was starting to learn his way around and he was starting to build an idea of the books he had read and what he would read next. There was a slight snag in his plan though, when he noticed that the book he wanted to borrow had just been taken by Roy. Considering the number of other books he had with him, surely he wouldn't miss the one. It was one Latvia had been quite eager about starting]

Um... excuse me, sorry. Are you in desperate need of that book? I was hoping to borrow it myself.

Hm? Oh, which one?

[Roy shifts the stack of books into one hand so he can better look at the covers.]

[Latvia tenses a little, ready to catch anything that might fall. To have so many books in one had a little worrisome]

The one you just took, the one on dungeons.

[Hey, he doesn't have a high Strength score for nothing! Roy frowns slightly as he taps the cover of the book thoughtfully. Then, deciding, he tugs it out of the stack.]

I'd like it when you're done with it, but I don't need it urgently. I don't think anything in there is just going to have the Answer-with-a-capital-A.

[Gratefully he takes the book and tucks it under his arm]

Oh, are you studying for something? I could probably direct you to the right books if you'd like and save you some time.

[ There he is again, submerged in books. Sayaka spends a hour or two in the library almost everyday, since knowledge through book spells is eventually helping her with her practice. Seeing him there has become a habit, and she smiles at him as she saunters over where he's sitting. ]

How long have you been here?

[She's always welcome to sit with him; he finds her pleasant company, and not disruptive. At her address, he looks up, then around, then shrugs.]

Since I finished with marefs. Not long enough to find anything really useful, so same as every night in that respect.

[ She'll sit down across from him, putting her own book down. ]

Nothing at all? That's strange.

Not really. If the information were meant to be accessible, I wouldn't have to look for it; it'd be provided by a mysterious old man or a helpful instructor or some other NPC. I'll honestly be surprised if I find out anything from this, but I can't ignore the small chance, and it's not like there's a horde of ghouls outside the front door eager to discuss property rights that I'm ignoring for this.

[ It is in the corridor rather than the library itself - for the princess was never one for the books - that Merida will stumble on Roy as he makes his way back to his dormitory. ]

I see you're still trying to read every book in the library. Have you found anything that may explain exactly what it is they want from us yet? All the local magicians seem to be as helpful as a certain googly old hag I used to know back home.

Trust me, when I find the answer, you won't need to ask to hear it.

[He lowers his voice and leans in a little.]

More importantly, I haven't ruled out the information being deliberately hidden.

Then I'll take that to mean I'll be the first to know.

[ Merida follows his lead and steals a glance or two at the corridor to ensure that no eavesdroppers lurked nearby before returning her attentions to the conversation at hand. ]

Do you think these magicians may be turning a deaf ear to all our questions on purpose as well?

Depends on what order I run into people, but I promise I won't keep it hidden till someone actually thinks to ask me.

[Despite her cautions, and his own fairly poor Spot check, Roy also takes a quick glance around before lowering his voice.]

Either they don't know and hate to admit it, or they do know and won't. The only thing that keeps me from ruling out the first one is that I know how much it bothers magic-users to admit they don't know things.

[Forgive Roy for not saluting in return -- there are about a dozen reasons piled in his arms.]

Oh no, I've got it. And no need for the Lord thing, I'm entirely untitled. The last time I pretended to be King of Nowhere, the inn exploded with all our dragon loot, one party member started speaking in ciphers that weren't as fun to decode as some people claimed they were, and I spent most of the night gaining character development in the form of learning how awful it is to be disgustingly hit on while female.

As you wish, Master Roy Greenhilt.

[Habits die hard, especially ones drilled in from young. Zhang Liao only fully understood the first two sentences, but he can get the gist of everything else and will just nod and hope he's got the right message.]

I suppose it is too much to hope that an easy answer can be found in the library.

If we were supposed to have the answer, it'd have been given to us by now. I probably won't find anything, but it's not like I'm overwhelmed with claims on my free time, so no sense in ignoring even a tiny chance.

In more or less detail. [He grunts as he shifts the stack to make sure he doesn't trample the kid.] I'm looking for specific information, so some things may be pretty skippable.

"Become"? This is just like my old college days, except that I can actually go back to my room without interrupting my roommate making out with yet another girl I briefly found interesting.

Well, then, I had not known you were a scholar. It is good to have many talents.
